I used to heal a pink elephant.
His name was Trompita,
my first patient,
with a stitched smile
and endless imaginary illnesses.
I wrapped him in blankets,
pressed a toy stethoscope
against his cotton chest,
and promised he would be okay.
Years later,
the toy stethoscope is gone.
Now I work in a children's hospital,
holding tiny hands,
drawing blood,
and watching courage appear
in the smallest patients.
Medicine is no longer pretend.
The fears are real.
The hopes are real.
The people are real.
Yet one thing has never changed:
When someone is hurting,
you show up.
The little girl who cared
for a pink elephant
didn't know about medicine,
but she understood compassion.
Today, I carry that lesson with me
toward white coats,
hospital hallways,
and a future devoted to healing.
Somewhere between Trompita and tomorrow,
a childhood game
became a purpose.
