Colors of Complexity

Alexis Santosa

Vibrancy comes in different shades

That must shine brighter than all colors

But in others, hums of quiet energy may lie,

Waiting yet to glow on a blank white canvas,

Resonating only when it has had time to dry

Speaking out for others in the face of wrong,

Words bursting to fight when cornered,

A flare of red, unable to be silenced

Courage never dissipating when weakened,

And with bravery mixes the sweet song

Of innocence, shielded from the world’s judging eyes

A shade of white; only pure intentions

Fill the mind, wishing to spread

Warmth for the bumpy road ahead

Although silent when unspoken to,

Shining brighter than the moon as it peeks from its cloudy rest

Is a spark of positivity, gleaming yellow like the stars,

Radiating energy that spreads to another through

Constant positivity practiced from years of test

To lend a helping hand to one,

Is to make the world a better place,

A light pink that fills with love, not hate,

Little acts that brighten a day

And show that I care for a person

My mind crowds itself with constant thoughts

That quiet down when pencil touches paper,

Fading sky blue links my creativity

That spontaneously brightens through its taper

When ideas show themselves through my words

And constant doodles in my journal

Colors that change with moods and times,

They sing symphonies when I open to the world,

When I close, they whisper breezily

But all those wavering shades define and unfurl

My potential, worth, complexity.

Through the simple art of rhyme,

I express what I can’t in everyday methods

That cannot be reflected

Through any

Other than humanity.
